Cars play an important role in our lives as far as transportation goes; however, they come with their own set of “necessary evils.” We have to buy them, repair them and make sure we use them safely.
If you’re a parent, you also know how important it is to make sure your children stay safe both while riding in the car and when they’re around them.
The CDC reports:
Motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death among children in the United States. But many of these deaths can be prevented. Buckling children in age—and size—appropriate car seats, booster seats, and seat belts reduces serious and fatal injuries by more than half.
Because child car safety is so important, we’ve compiled some tips for making sure your bases are covered:
- Use the right car seat and restraints for your child’s age and size (height and weight).
- Check to make sure the seats are installed correctly. Car seat installation is not an easy task, which is why about 80% of car seats are installed incorrectly.
- Register all car seats to keep up with any recall notices.
- Never leave your children in the car by themselves, even if it’s “only for a minute” and on a cool day. Cars can heat up extremely fast even if it doesn’t seem hot outside.
- Keep your power windows on “lock” when small children are riding near them. Hands, fingers and even sometimes a child’s head can get stuck in between the window and the car.
- Teach your children how to stay safe around parked cars. Children die every year from rollover accidents and from trapping themselves inside cars or trunks.
Accidents happen, but if your child is a victim of negligence on the part of another driver or caregiver, you need an experienced wrongful death attorney to manage your case.
