No matter what season of the year it is, driving safely and defensively is something that should be every person’s priority. However, in the winter, extra precaution should be taken on the slick and snowy roads. And with fall recently kicking off, winter is right around the corner.
According to IcyRoadSafety.com, an average of 467 road fatalities per year occurred between 2008 and 2010 due to dangerous winter road conditions.
Below are some safety tips to consider when you start heading out on the town this winter.
- Be equipped and prepared. In certain states, during the winter you never know when you may be caught in a blizzard or ice storm. Always being prepared is essential. Keep extra water, snacks, a blanket, a flashlight, antifreeze, working wiper blades and sunglasses in your car. In addition to these things, verify before winter hits that your cars’ tires and battery are in good condition. Last, but not least, have a full tank of gas.
- Do not follow too close. In the wet winter conditions, it is very difficult to come to a quick stop – no matter how great your four wheel drive may be. It takes much longer to stop your vehicle on wet and icy pavement as opposed to dry road conditions.
- Do not drive fast. As stated above, stopping quickly in these winter conditions is almost impossible. You simply must go at or under the speed limit in these types of conditions. If not, you may find yourself in a crash or skidding off the pavement.
- Do not use cruise control. Avoid unnecessary lane changes and quick acceleration. It is very easy to hydroplane in this type of weather. If the car does hydroplane, when your cruise control is in use your car will accelerate and make matters worse. Cruise control can be a great convenience but not during winter conditions!
- Stay home if necessary. If you don’t have to be on the road during winter conditions, please stay home. If you are out when the weather gets bad, find a safe place to pull over.
Regardless of the season, if you have had a car accident due to someone being an irresponsible driver then find a car accident attorney who can help try to get you the compensation that you deserve.
